“Teaching music is not my main purpose. I want to make good citizens. If children hear fine music from the day of their birth and learn to play it, they develop sensitivity, discipline and endurance. They get a beautiful heart.”
- Shinichi Suzuki
For the past 20 years, Buffy has been bringing the joy of music to children and their families. She strives to enable her students to be passionate about their music and feel confident sharing their gifts with everyone around them. Starting students in a classical foundation of excellence based on the Suzuki method, Buffy helps students build ownership of their instrument and guides them in learning a wide variety of musical styles keeping lessons fun and diverse. By introducing children to a spectrum of music such as classical, folk, fiddle, jazz, and improvisation, they can become comfortable playing all types of music and reach a greater audience.
Buffy Andrews (BMus) began learning the violin at the age of eight. She grew up in Prince Edward Island and had exposure to both classical and folk music. Throughout grade school, Buffy was part of the Singing Strings, a youth orchestra that performed regularly in PEI and represented Canada at the International Society for Music Education conference in Amsterdam in 1996. She played often with the PEI Symphony and decided to pursue her degree in music at Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS, studying with Philippe Djokic in 2000.
During her university years, Buffy played with the Dalhousie Orchestra and the Dalhousie Chamber Orchestra and also seasoned her fiddling skills, busking at the local farmer's market on the weekends. Buffy received the President's Award at the PEI Kiwanis Musical Festival as the "Most Musical Performer" in 2002 and was given the honour of performing as a soloist at the Indian River Music Festival.
Buffy traveled with CTI Music Ministries in 2002 to Guatemala City and performed for schools and troubled youth. She is also featured on numerous recordings including ECMA nominated artist, Jamie MacKay. After meeting her husband and fellow musician, Terry Flick, at Dalhousie University, they lived in China for two years from 2006-2008 teaching Kindergarten English in Shenzhen and Shanghai at the SMIC Private School.
In 2009, Buffy and Terry moved to Winnipeg and where she played with the University of Manitoba Symphony Orchestra and was a member of the Hesed String Quartet. In the winter of 2012 she was a featured soloist with Prairie Voices, repeat seasons at Festival du Voyager, and performed independently and with a number of groups and bands around Winnipeg. Buffy's work was featured on Del Barber's album Prairieography which received a 2015 Juno Nomination in the Roots and Traditional Album category.
Buffy is also experienced in teaching music classes for groups of children ages infants to 5, introducing the basic concepts of music in a fun and energetic environment ideal for each learning stage. In 2012 she was certified as a Suzuki Violin teacher. Buffy and Terry often perform music together and have four children, Noa, Django, Fergus and Sullivan. In 2016 they moved to Fredericton, New Brunswick where she continues to teach and perform.
With Buffy as an instructor, our daughter simply thrived playing and practicing the violin! Buffy has an exceptional ability to help her students master technique and have fun playing at the same time. Her mix of classical and fiddle education made playing the violin come alive for our daughter. I can't say enough good things about Buffy!!

Buffy, this was our first experience with music lessons and I was not sure how much to expect. Well, you teach- and you teach well. BUT you also inspire, motivate, grow, build, care, love, and give. We have all had our lives enriched by this experience. It may take these kids 10, 20, or 30 years to understand what you have given them, but I see it, and it's amazing. It's about so much more than music- it's caring, community, self worth, resilience, friendship, and on and on.
